Q43

KitchenSo the other day we were just chilling and minding our own business when our Dubai Meat Club Instagram went *ding*

Now we normally don’t get excited when someone tags us but this image was different. It looked like a wooden board in the shape of a bull with literally mounds of different cooked meat sitting on it staring at us lustily.

And underneath it words that I will forever remember : “Hey Dubai Meat Club! You guys wanna come try this?”

Now that’s just like waving a red flag in front of a bull. In this case waving The Bull in front of the Dubai Meat Club.

The eager beavers that we are we immediately set up an appointment to face The Bull in what is, we truly believe, one of Dubai’s most stylish night spot, Q43 over at Media One Hotel.

We rocked up nice and early (having skipped lunch!) and were met at the door by Karin Forsgren, Q43’s Communication Manager, and the person responsible for seducing us with that Instagram picture.

Perched on the 43rd floor the restaurant overlooks the city and boasts awesome views. But the view is not the only good thing about this place.

The interior decor is absolutely gorgeous. New York style classy lounge meets upmarket restaurant. I don’t quite know how to explain it but it felt classy and homely at the same time. This is a place where you will find an investment banker dressed in his Armani suit sitting at the same table with an art director wearing shorts and flip flops. And the cool thing is neither one looks out of place.

But the centerpiece of attraction in that place are their super chic pool tables. Yup, that’s right. Pool tables which look like they were stolen from Versace’s mansion. The picture below doesn’t do them justice. I’m pretty sure they had a separate fund for these things because they look pricey. And they don’t just have one. They have maybe EIGHT of these bad boys complete with black cloth and sleek cues.
PoolTable

These pool tables are worth the price of admission alone.

They have a little dance floor for when things get frisky later on at night. They also have an awesome private dining area with a couple of the same stylish pool tables which you can book for private events.

But let’s face it. No matter how nicely decorated the place may be it’s the food that reigns supreme. And that’s what we were there for.

Seated next to the window we soaked in the brilliant Dubai skyline in the night lights (make sure you insist on sitting next to the window when you go – you’ll thank us).

OK. OK. The food. The Bull.

ThebUll2

Here it was!

Served on a wooden block in the shape of a bull it had the following TWO KILOS of meat on it. Beef Ribs. Sausages. Flank Steak. And the mightiest Tomahawk I have ever seen. It’s a bit overwhelming to look at it but your primal instincts kick in and you let go. And this is what it looks like!

BOYE

No joke. One of our members couldn’t hold back and went all Flintsone on the food. It was both amusing and scary to watch.

The meats were served with some lovely choice of sauces. There was peppercorn and a ridiculously awesome red Arabic dip which was so spicy. On the sides were freshly salted deep fried chips and a completely ignored garden salad.

We had ordered all the meats cooked medium. The Flank Steak was tender, juicy and melted in your mouth. It tasted great with the spicy sauce!

The sausages were nice and flavorful and the spicy sauce added to them as well.

The Tomahawk was a touch under (temperature wise) and erred on rare. I don’t mind rare my self but we have some finicky members and they would have liked the Tomahawk cooked a bit more. Having said that the seasoning was perfect and the char outside was really delicious.

But the star of that dish were the Beef Ribs (remnants of which can be seen in the picture above). So tender they were falling off the massive bones. Touch of smoke with a barbecue glaze and cooked to perfection. I have had a lot of ribs in my life but these were very close to the top!

After ploughing our way through two kilos of meat we sat back satisfied with the days’ work with just one question on our minds. What would make this great meal absolutely sublime?

Dessert

Now I know we’re the Dubai Meat Club but everyone has a soft spot for dessert and we’re no exception.

There was a lovely New York style Cheesecake, a gooey Chocolate Fondant, a moist Chocolate Brownie with vanilla ice cream and, my pick of the day, Black Sesame Creme Brûlée.

While the other desserts were very nice it was this Black Brûlée which melted my heart. Such delicate flavors served up so magnificently!

Finally, we were satisfied!

Let me tell you something. Q43 is not only a ridiculously stylish place to chill out with some friends they have an amazing dining experience too. Set in the heart of everything that is cool (sorry DIFC!) they might just have a gold mine on their hands. Here’s hoping we don’t see a drop in quality (like so many other Dubai haunts) because I want this place to be my weekly hangout.

Till next time!

Prime Steakhouse – Meydan Hotel

01 Main Restaurant

Alright! Dubai Meat Club is back with a bang! We had to take a little hiatus and do a bit of soul searching (read put together a list of steakhouses we wanted to attack!) but now we’re back in full force. And what better way to kick start this months’ review than the uber awesome Prime Steakhouse at Meydan Hotel.

And here’s a little secret. A little birdie told me that their steaks are a personal favorite of none other than the man himself, HH Sheikh Mohammed. If that’s true then I have to tell you he has awesome taste because the food in this place is bordering on sublime. Seriously.

Overlooking the racecourse the steakhouse, which is open only for dinner, guarantees stunning views during the races. When the races are not on it guarantees stunning steaks.

We were seated by the window (best place to be) amid the extremely opulent interiors where the centerpiece is a glistening white Grand Piano. Obediently we sank into the comfy chairs and awaited our fate at the hands of the extremely talented Chef Mohannad.

02 Beef Carpaccio

He started us off with probably my favorite starter of all time, the beef carpaccio. Now I’m a huge fan of this dish and it needs to be done absolutely right in order for me to really love it. And it was. Tender and creamy it was topped with a nice fresh salad and lovely parmesan shavings.

03 Crab Cakes

04 Duck Liver

Accompanying the carpaccio was a plate of crab cakes and the creamiest, most velvety, duck liver pate I have ever had. For real. It was like butter as I spread it over my lightly toasted brioche.

The tasty food aside each dish was a work of visual art. It’s reassuring to see attention to detail not only to food preparation but presentation as well. As they say you eat with your eyes first.

Of course no matter how good the starters may be they don’t define the restaurant and so, once we were done, we started looking around for the real reason we were there.

06 Main Course

And there they were!

Four cuts of the juiciest steaks on the menu. First up there was the perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked Wagyu Sirloin. Followed by the equally delicious Ribe Eye and Tenderloin. Lastly we made a trip west for a chunk of delectable US Prime.

The perfectly cooked steaks were tender and juicy and we finally were able to understand why Dubai’s Royalty has a soft spot for this place.

To make matters even more interesting we were given our choice of colorful steak knives to choose from as well!

05 Knives

By the time we were done with the mains we were feeling decidedly satisfied with the outcome of the evening. However, the kitchen had one more surprise in store for us. Actually there were five more surprises.

Macadamia Pie
07 Macadema Pie

Chocolate Mousse
08 Chocolate Mousse

Creme Brûlée
09 Creme Brulee

Lemon Tart
10 Lemon Tart

And finally the Cheesecake
11 Cheesecake

I have never really eaten so much in my life or since then. But every bite was totally worth it.

The Prime Steakhouse is one of those places where the real fun is taking someone there for the first time and watch them getting blown away!

Soho Bar & Grill – Century Village

Soho Sign

Let me tell you about the best kept secret in Dubai (and hopefully after I’m done it won’t be a secret much longer). Nestled all the way in the back in Century Village, Garhoud, is Soho Bar & Grill, home to some of the best meat dishes I’ve had the pleasure of ravaging. This includes my personal favorite the Fat Cow Burger! What’s the Fat Cow Burger? You’ll see.

The restaurant is designed to be extremely casual with some outdoor seating as well. There are booths if you fancy a bit of privacy or, if you like to flaunt your food and company, then there’s a long table with high chairs which is where we decided to make camp. The casual interiors and welcoming staff put us at ease which is exactly how we prefer to dine. We don’t like places that are too uppity and we were glad Soho Bar & Grill did not take itself too seriously.

Head Chef Jean Strauss decided to pay our table a quick visit and we decided to leave our evening in his capable hands. Probably the best decision we made that day.

01 Chicken Wings

We started the evening with a bucket of steaming hot chicken wings lathered in gorgeous barbecue sauce. What we loved was that the wings were piping hot. Too often you get those pre-fried wings that are warmed up at the last minute. Not these! Our wings looked and tasted like they had been freshly prepared literally ten seconds before hitting our table. Smacking lips and stained fingers were all we had to show after two minutes!

Right, on to the real stuff.

02 Ribs

The ribs arrived covered in a creamy barbecue sauce giving off a lovely smokey aroma. The meat falling off the bone is always a good sign and was evidence of the hours of braising and smoking that the meat goes through before being marinated for over 24 hours. The meat was tender and succulent with the barbecue sauce being the perfect accompaniment. Highly recommended!

04 Centre Cut Fillet

The medium-rare Centre Cut Fillet was next on the list. Now we pride ourselves on recognizing a good steak when we see one and there was no doubting the Centre Cut was just that. It had a nice char on the outside while the inside was a perfectly cooked pink. Juicy and moist to cut and even more so in your mouth. This is how a steak should be!

On the side was a ladle of creamy mushrooms and potatoes made four ways. Four ways, you ask? Boiled, grilled, shallow fried and baked before getting on the plate! Yup, all that just for potatoes. These guys take their food seriously!

05 SirloinStrip Prawns

Not satisfied with just the Centre Cut fillet we demanded more steak. And we got. Three pieces of medium-rare Sirloin Strips covered in creamy sauce with a side of juicy char grilled Jumbo Prawns. Now I know we like our meat but there’s something sexy about large jumbo prawns on your plate. The meat was, once again, perfectly cooked and the seafood was fresh with a lovely smokey char to it. This was accompanied by thick, nicely salted, french fries.

03 Fat Cow Burger

Right. On to the main event. The FAT COW BURGER! This is what we had been waiting for all this while. Now this is no normal burger. This is over 300 grams of ground Angus beef with a filling of roasted red peppers, melted feta and goats’ cheese, garlic and fresh basil leaves. Yup! All that’s INSIDE the patty. The real treat is cutting right through the middle of the burger to see all the juicy fillings ooze out and settle on your wooden board. Now beware. You need to be able to unhinge your jaws to get this monster in your mouth but the effort is worth it.

And this is what the inside of that burger looked like.

06 FatCow inside

Soho Bar & Grill is a beautifully relaxed dining experience. The staff are friendly and helpful. The ambience is chilled out. But the food here reigns supreme. Innovative Chef Jean Strauss has made sure of that. If you want to go out with a bunch of friends and chill out over awesome food then Soho Bar & Grill is a must.

That’s all from the Dubai Meat Club for now.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House – The Address Hotel, Dubai Marina

RDC 001

The first Meat Up of The Dubai Meat Club took place at the swanky Address Hotel in Dubai Marina at Ruth’s Chris Steak House. The name’s a bit of a mouthful but then so are the steaks!

The place has a nice bar where you can collect and hang out before you get seated at your table. It’s quite warm and casual and I suspect you can just go there and chill out with a couple of beers as well without having to make a dinner reservation. So that’s quite nice.

But we were there to sample US Prime Cuts and pretty soon the guys started looking out for the Maître D’ in search of our table. We had reserved a table on the terrace hoping to catch the last few days of good Dubai weather and at first it seemed like we had made a good choice.

While the weather was brilliant there was a decided lack of lighting where we sat which was a slight inconvenience. It made reading the menus a tad tough and more importantly you couldn’t see the food clearly.

But that’s a minor point and I think, if pointed out, the management should be able to address that.

Anyway, on to the food and wine.

Since we were all there for the steaks a bottle of Wild Rock from New Zealand was the evening’s pick. Part Malbec, part Merlot it was full bodied and a touch dry and actually very good! It worked well with the seafood starters as well as the steaks so it comes highly recommended!

RDC 002

We decided to each go with a starter and main of which there was a very decent variety. I ordered the seared Aahi Tuna on a bed of Wasabi sauce which was pretty much cooked to perfection. The tangy wasabi sauce and the pickled vegetables worked perfectly with each other.

The others at the table ordered a selection of differently cooked shellfish. There was Mushrooms & Crab Meatballs, Ceviche, Voodo Prawns and Barbecue Prawns being shared and consumed and each starter was received quite well.

RDC 004

We were also served a complimentary Tuna fillet and a Beef Carpacio on a bed of rocket leaves both of which went down quite well. All in all I thought the starters were reasonably priced (for a 5 Star establishment) and were quite flavorful.

The Beef fillet was a huge hit at our table with 8 out of 10 ordering that while two others ordered a Rib Eye and the New York Strip. The steaks arrived in unison on a bed of sizzling butter and super hot plates and, with my creamed spinach on the side, I got ready to tuck in.

RDC 003

As I dug into my thick portion of fat-free fillet I realized my meat was a bit over done. I like my steaks medium but this one erred on the side of medium-well which made the meat slightly tough to chew. Everyone at the table seemed to have the same problem. One of us ordered it rare and thought his was medium.

I’m not sure whether this happened in the kitchen or that they were served on plates so hot that the meat kept cooking while it was being served.

But having said that the steaks were juicy and well seasoned with a beautiful char on the outside. The sides were delicious and worked well with the meats. And the Wild Rock wine was the perfect accompaniment.

The staff were friendly and knowledgable and ensured that our glasses were always full (which is the first thing I judge a restaurant on!). In fact when told about the meat being slightly over our server looked mortified and immediately rushed into the kitchen to deliver the news to the chef.

All in all it was quite a pleasant evening. We liked the place a lot. I think if they resolve the lighting issue on the terrace and maybe slightly tweak the level of wellness on the meats I think we have a winner.

The Beginning

This is the Dubai Meat Club’s first post!

We’ll be heading out to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at The Address Hotel, Dubai Marina, on March 13.

Follow our tweets as we report live from there. Once we’re done stuffing our faces with prime US meat we’ll throw up a review as well.

Stay tuned for updates.
